Schools Program

Bringing together the people shaping the world today with the leaders of tomorrow.

The Schools Program of the Council engages high school, community college and university students with programming designed to develop the international leaders of tomorrow across a broad range of disciplines. These programs range from meet-the-speaker events to in-school clubs, junior ambassador programs, conferences, summer institutes and travel abroad scholarships. A centerpiece of the Schools Program is the Youth Outreach Initiative that delivers Council programming to economically disadvantaged high school students throughout Northern California.

Meet the Speaker Opportunities

(Academic Year)

The Schools Program provides students and teachers with the opportunity to meet with speakers for small group discussions and scholarships to attend public programs.

Student Ambassador Program

(Academic Year)

Student Ambassadors play a vital leadership role in promoting dialogue and awareness of international affairs at their high school and college campuses.  Ambassador organize student visits to Council public programs, attend monthly meetings, complete research project and participate in a debate.

Study Abroad Scholarships

(Academic Year)

Exposure to other cultures is one of the best ways for students to engage in world affairs.  Through a partnership with Youth for Understanding program, high school students can applu for a limited number of scholarships to study abroad for semester or year-long programs.

Summer Institute on International Affairs

(Summer)

The Summer Institute is an eight week program for high school and community college students who want to deepen their knowledge of interantional affairs in a small group environment.  Students attend Council programs, meet privately with speakers, engage in dialogue with their peers and are responsible for weekly reading and written assignments.

International Career Night

November 20, 2008

In celebration of International Education week, this event is a unique opportunity for high school and college students to discuss career choices with international leaders in education, media, government, law, business and the nonprofit sector.

Annual Foreign Policy Conference Scholarship

(May)

Scholarships to the annual foreign policy conference at Asilomar, the most prestigious international affairs conference on the West Coast, are available for K-12 teachers and both high school and college students. 

Bay Area Global Education Project

The Bay Area Global Education Project (BAGEP) is hosted by the World Affairs Council and works in partnership with the Schools Program. Our partnership with The Bay Area Global Education Project (BAGEP) offers additional professional development workshops, study groups, conferences and scholarship opportunities, and an extensive resource library for K-12 teachers.
