About The World Affairs Council

We live in a world where addressing our most pressing issues -- from economic competitiveness to climate change, from global health to stemming the proliferation of advanced weapons -- will require unprecedented levels of cooperation and accountability. In this context, the World Affairs Council of Northern California has a unique role to play.

The Council offers a forum with more than 18,000 engaged community participants where diverse audiences engage in dialogue that can inform their actions. Policy makers, business executives, philanthropists, academics, civic leaders and an attentive public join in the Council’s programs to listen, learn discuss and debate -- deepening understanding and finding solutions.

Most of these conversations are open to the public, and all of them benefit from the Council’s Northern California location. Over the past two decades, this region has emerged as a powerful locus of innovation and forward-looking solutions. We are known for our ideas, our ideals and our entrepreneurship. We search for knowledge. We enjoy diversity. We welcome new thinking. We seek break-through ideas. That spirit is reflected in every conversation we convene and every program we offer at the World Affairs Council of Northern California.

OUR HERITAGE

Founded in 1947 following the San Francisco conference that established the United Nations, the Council’s heritage is one we take very seriously. We embrace the commitment to provide a forum where leaders of all sectors can join more than 18,000 engaged community participants to engage on issues of international importance. Each of us is aware of the ways in which international issues touch upon our daily lives. In the past decades, the Council has hosted hundreds of foreign heads of states, and thousands of leading government officials, journalists and intellectuals, each of whom reminds us of the ways in which we can influence and are affected by international events.

International Affairs Involvement

The Council hosts events and conferences with the leaders who impact global affairs, including heads of state, government officials, international philanthropists, journalists, business leaders, and academics. All of our guests bring perspectives that go beyond the headlines, providing our audience with the unique opportunity to hear from and engage with foreign policy and international relations experts.

The Council reaches out to students, teachers, and young professionals to enhance their opportunities for learning about international affairs. We provide our corporate members with special programming and access to leaders of the international business community. We also host art exhibits that provide a different angle on world affairs. Through the audio and video efforts, we are increasingly making our programming available anytime, anywhere.

Membership and Support

Council membership entitles you to a variety of benefits and supports our broad range of educational activities. Our major donors comprise the Donors Circle, whose members enjoy special opportunities with Council guests.
