At a time of world-wide economic recession, we are faced with the problems of global climate change; a devastating natural disaster in Haiti; insurgencies in Afghanistan and Iraq; civil conflict in Sudan, Congo and elsewhere where governance is weak and leaders are predatory. While at times it seems that our political system fails to address dangers until they are transformed into crises, it is our capacity as a society to invent and to rally that reassures and serves us in the end. |
