Schools ProgramBringing together the people shaping the world today with the leaders of tomorrow.
The Schools Program of the Council engages high school, community college and university students with programming designed to develop the international leaders of tomorrow across a broad range of disciplines. These programs range from meet-the-speaker events to student leadership programs, conferences, summer study groups and travel abroad scholarships. A centerpiece of the Schools Program is the Youth Outreach Initiative that delivers Council programming to students at under-resourced high schools in the Bay Area.
Meet the Speaker Opportunities(Academic Year)The Schools Program provides students and teachers with the opportunity to meet with speakers for small group discussions and scholarships to attend public programs. To find out about upcoming meet the speaker opportunities, join our mailing list by sending your name, school and grade level to SchoolsProgram [at] wacsf [dot] org. Student AMBASSADOR Program(Academic Year)Student Ambassadors play a vital leadership role in promoting dialogue and awareness of international affairs at their high school and college campuses; they are also given the opportunity to dive into world issues through research, discussion, outreach and action. Past participants in the Schools Program's Ambassador Program, Summer Institute or Annual Conference Policy Simulation may be eligible to become an Ambassador Program Group Leader. Information on the 2010-2011 Ambassador program will be available in mid-August. Study Abroad Scholarships(Academic Year)Exposure to other cultures is one of the best ways for students to engage in world affairs. Through a partnership with Youth for Understanding (YFU) program, high school students can apply for a limited number of scholarships to study abroad for summer, semester or year-long programs. Applications for the 2011-2012 study abroad scholarships will be available in the fall. To access an application or learn more about the YFU program, visit their website. Summer Institute on International Affairs(Summer)The Summer Institute is an eight week program for high school and community college students who want to deepen their knowledge of international affairs in a small group environment. Students attend Council programs, meet privately with speakers, engage in dialogue with their peers and are responsible for weekly reading and written assignments. More information and applications are available here. Applications are due May 21, 2010. International Career NightNovemberIn celebration of International Education week, the World Affairs Council hosts an International Career Mentor Night each November. This event is a unique opportunity for high school and undergraduate students to discuss career choices with Bay Area professionals who have experience in international education, journalism, government, law, business and the nonprofit sector. Foreign Policy Conference ScholarshipsStudents and K-12 Teachers scholarship recipients participate fully in the Annual Conference and engage in a policy simulation on one of the key global issues under discussion at the conference. WorldAffairs 2010 was held on March 11-12 in San Francisco. Click here to see the winners of the WorldAffairs 2010 Policy Simulation. Youth Outreach InitiativeThe Youth Outreach program delivers Council programming to students at under-resourced high schools in the Bay Area through classroom discussion and conversation with speakers. Teachers and Educators receive transportation stipends and program scholarships to attend Council events. Schools Program staff will also conduct classroom visits to better prepare students for events through the Schools Program.
